Reagan Birthplace Clock/Plate Auction
This “one of a kind” plate/clock is being offered by “Silent Auction” with October 31, 2014 being the last day to place a bid. Proceeds from the Auction will be used for the upkeep of the Tampico Historical Museum. The Plate is on display in the Ronald Reagan Birthplace Museum and can be viewed anytime daily from 10 AM to 4 PM and Sunday from 1 PM to 4 PM. PROGRAMS
July 2014 Program – Using a diving rod to locate bodies & determine gender. Held in our Tampico Memorial Cemetery.
The Tampico Area Historical Society (TAHS) changed the venue for their monthly meeting and met in their cemetery. Guest speaker was Mike Chandler from the Dixon area. Mike demonstrated how to use a divining rod to locate bodies and also to determine the gender. This was very helpful since there was some question about a specific grave of Howell Searcy, the only confederate soldier buried in the Memorial Cemetery. Documents prove his wife was buried there in 1902. An obituary for Howell noted he was buried in Round Grove after a lengthy stay in the County Home in 1929. However, a small news article in the Sterling Gazette said his body had been exhumed and moved to the Memorial Cemetery in 1930. The ‘rod’ clearly showed that two bodies were in the area where his headstone is located; one male, one female. Mr. Searcy has quite a file at the Family History Library/Research Center in the historical society. He is also a 1st cousin to Jesse James – one of each of their parents are sibling
s. The TAHS would like to find a way to provide a ‘properly engraved headstone. Valentine Iamartino came all the way from Connecticut and made a point of attending this program. The photo shows Valentine experimenting with the divining rod. The rod will point to the left if the body is female and right if the body is male. Mike brought extra rods so anyone that wanted to try it could do so. It seemed to work for everyone – some better than others. Plans are in the making to use this technique to find and mark burial sites in the old, original Tampico Cemetery just south of town. SS Leopoldville?
Hello,
The Tampico Area Historical Society is compiling information from descendants of soldiers and/or possible survivors of the SS Leopoldville Troop ship that was sunk by a German U 486 on December 24, 1944. We are interested in communicating with anyone that meets that criteria, but have a special interest in the Dronenberg family. T/Sgt. Donald P Dronenberg, son of Ralph & Nellie [nee: Brady), was one of the servicemen lost at sea. He was a ‘local boy’ from the Tampico, IL area.
I am contacting anyone with the surname of Dronenberg (mostly in Princeton or Peoria, IL area) in the hopes that they may connect to this family. If so, I’m hoping they have family stories or photos that could give us some insight into Donald’s short life, or perhaps share what their personal family history may reveal about that historic day. Donald was the only son of Ralph & Nellie (nee: Brady), however Ralph (1888-1976) had a brother, George (1881-?) and an adopted sister, Carrie.

VISIT FROM TAMPICO SCHOOL!
Visit from Mrs. Wangelin’s 4th grade class on May 8th. Mrs. Wangelin does a great job bringing her classes to the Historical Society and the Birthplace to learn more about their hometown history. Last year she came back for a ‘hands-on’ approach. Stations were set up with information depicting some part of Tampico’s history. There were questionnaires for each child to use as a guideline and volunteers available to assist the children and answer their questions. Afterward, the children wrote about their experiences and sent them to us as a thank you. We are looking forward to continuing this fun & educational day with this year’s class.

TOUR DAVENPORT’S HISTORIC CHURCHES DURING THE FIRST “ALTAR CRAWL”
May 19th Event Features Hilltop Places of Worship
Doors of the churches of some of Davenport’s most historic congregations will be open to visitors, Sunday, May 19th for the Hilltop Campus Village Altar Crawl. Six churches in and around the boundaries of The Village will welcome visitors for the free, first-time event. Hours are 1-5PM. Participating churches include: Bethel A.M.E., First Baptist, First Christian, First Presbyterian, St. John’s United Methodist, and Trinity Episcopal.
May is designated as Preservation Month by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. All of these churches are home to some of Davenport’s earliest communities of faith, tracing their roots to the city’s beginnings. Their first meetings were in homes and buildings located in early Davenport. As the city grew, the congregations moved to the hills above downtown. Most of the structures, built between 1867 and 1964, were designed by master architects from Davenport, Chicago and New York. Five of the six are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Not content to rest on their historic foundations, these congregations continue to give back by hosting many social programs benefitting people living in Davenport. “Churches have always been secure cornerstones of villages, and we are privileged to be home to some of the most historic, architecturally significant and deeply-rooted places of worship in the Quad Cities. We think people will find this unique and attractive feature of the area very interesting,” said Scott Tunnicliff, Director of Hilltop Campus Village.
The May 19th open house will allow the churches to showcase the architecture of their buildings, history of the churches and their congregations, as well as current community programs and services. Visitors may begin their tour at any participating church where guides will be on hand to welcome guests and direct them to points of interest.

Participating Churches &History of their Congregations:
Bethel A.M.E. Church, 323 W. 11th St.*- Bethel A.M.E. traces its roots to its founding in 1866 when four men came together to organize the African Methodist Episcopal Church of Davenport. It was the first African American congregation in Davenport and among the earliest in the state of Iowa. The stucco and half timbered building, designed by the noted Davenport architectural firm of Clausen and Clausen, has been in service since 1908. The interior features a barrel vaulting over the nave and a domed apse behind the altar; the stained glass windows were donated by members of the congregation.
First Baptist Church, 1401 Perry St.*- The cornerstone of the present church building was laid in 1889 during the 50th anniversary of the founding of the congregation. Then called “Calvary Baptist,” the sanctuary was designed in the Romanesque Revival style by John S. Wollacott of Chicago. Wells Glass Company of Chicago created the stained glass windows. Davenport’s Baptists held their first service on September 13, 1839. The congregation’s first church was built at the corner of 4th and Brady on land donated by Antoine LeClaire, making the congregation the oldest continuously meeting Protestant congregation in Davenport. During the tour there will be historical items on display and refreshments available in Fellowship Hall.
First Christian Church, 510 E. 15th St. – With its current building constructed in 1964, this congregation will celebrate its 175th year in Davenport in 2014. Davenport’s First Christian Church began in a house at 3rd and Main on July 28, 1839, with 21 charter members. The first church home was in the Tapley carpenter shop at 2nd and Brady. As the congregation grew, it moved to different locations, building two churches in the process. First Christian is affiliated with the Christian Church, also known as the Disciples of Christ. The Christian Church is a denomination that grew out of the Scottish Presbyterian Church and is recognized as having its roots in the United States. The tour will feature music, visits to the sanctuary, prayer chapel, fellowship hall and gymnasium as well as an historical display and refreshments.
First Presbyterian Church,* 1702 Iowa St.- Built 1897-98 in the classic Romanesque style, First Presbyterian’s sanctuary was designed by the Galesburg architectural firm of Gottschalk & Beadle who designed a nearly identical church on Galesburg Square that was completed one year prior. Its stained glass windows are by J and R Lamb Studios of New York City. The founding congregation met in April, 1838, in a small building on Ripley Street with 10 members. During the past 175 years, the congregation has worshiped at five different locations and built three churches. Altar crawl visitors are invited to tour the sanctuary, balcony, chapel and elaborately decorated original pastor’s study, as well as enjoy an organ demonstration and refreshments in the Fellowship Hall.
St. John’s United Methodist Church, 109 E. 14th St.*- The cornerstone for today’s church was laid in 1902, and services began there in 1903. It was designed by Parke T. Burrows with F. G. Clausen serving as the supervising engineer. Davenport Methodists trace their beginnings to a small congregation in Rockingham, a settlement located on Davenport’s southwest side. The first services in Davenport began in 1837, and the first Methodist church was erected in 1843. During the 19th Century, several Methodist congregations formed and additional buildings erected. Two churches came together to form the congregation that dedicated St. John’s in 1903. Highlights of the May 19th tour include the sanctuary, a conference/history room, the downstairs of the former parsonage, plus refreshments at The Center, located across 14th Street and home to the popular “Skate Church” and many other community activities.
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 121 W. 12th St.*- Built 1867-1873, this Gothic-style church is the oldest on the tour and was consecrated as Grace Cathedral. It was the first cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa. It was designed by Edward Tuckerman Potter of New York City, one of the leading church architects of his time. The first Episcopal parish was established in 1841. Its first church was a small frame building erected at Fourth and Main Streets, with a crude altar, plank benches and a round stove in the nave; a second church, destroyed by fire in 1873, featured the first pipe organ in Iowa. Congregations from the old Trinity Episcopal Parish and Grace Cathedral merged in 1910 to form Trinity Cathedral. Visitors will tour the sanctuary and rarely opened original sacristy.

TAHS – August & September Updates
We continue to have our “Show & Tell” at each of our regular Historical Society meetings. At the September meeting, Roy & Mary Lou Haney brought an unusual item and asked everyone try to guess what it was. No one guessed correctly. It was a long pole with what looked something like a garden spade on the end. The handle had a grip that allowed you to turn it. Several of us guessed it as a post hole digger. It turned out it was an ice digger for cutting hole in ice for ice fishing. The spade or spoon type end would then be used to scoop out the ice after you hand-cranked the hole! Mary Lou researched it and said they were somewhat “rare” and she was thinking of selling it. It was a fun time guessing. Please continue to bring your “Show & Tell” items to each meeting, even if we have a program scheduled. Thank you!

The TAMPICO CHRISTMAS IN THE COUNTRY committee has selected the 2nd Saturday in December – Dec. 8, 2012 – for the annual Tree Lighting and Royalty selection festivities. In conjunction with this, the Tampico Volunteer Ambulance Service is making plans for a Chili Supper following the Crowning Ceremony. UPDATE ON WHITESIDE COUNTY HISTORY BOOK
Due to many requests from those researching family histories we have extended the deadline for submitting family stories for the new Whiteside Co. History and Families Book to Dec.1st. If you haven’t sent your family’s story you still have time to have it included. Whether your family has lived in the county five months or five generations, we want your story.
Over 200 articles have been received along with 195 pictures. While most replies were from Whiteside Co., we have received articles from residents living in all parts of the U.S. Many have ordered the book.. Libraries and Historical Societies also have placed orders. Staff member from universities in Grand Forks, ND and New Haven, CT have submitted stories and ordered this publication.
The book is available through pre-publication sales only. A limited number will be printed. It will be an attractive 81/2″ by 11″ book, beautifully bound in swirl-grained leatherette with a gold stamped seal depicting the Morrison depot. The cost is $54.95 plus $6.50 for shipping. Local residents may choose to pick up the book and avoid the shipping fee. Please make this option known with your order. Send orders to: Whiteside Co. Brochures notifying residents of the Dec. 1st deadline have been mailed. Histories of local churches and schools are now being accepted. There is a discounted charge of $75 for 1/4 page, $85 for 1/2 page and $125 for a full page in the book. We are sure you will want your church or school to be included in the special section of the new county book.

I have been very fortunate to have a helper for the last few month to help organize upstairs in our Family History Library & Research Center. She has really helped put a dent in our filing! Her time is getting more limited to help, so I’m still looking for helpers. An hour or two a week would really help get things in order. I was amazed at all the “finds” up there. We’re very fortunate to have this building and a place to archive our history. Our membership is very low, especially for local people. Please consider joining our Historical Society.
